WADING & GROUND NESTING
BIRD CONSERVATION
Wading and ground nesting birds such as lapwing, curlew, snipe, and skylark are among the most pressured farmland and wetland species in the UK, with population declines driven in large part by high levels of nest predation. Our conservation work in this area focuses on targeted, legal predator control as a practical and evidence-based tool for improving nest success and chick survival rates. Working alongside farmers, landowners, and conservation organisations, we design and implement predator management programmes tailored to the specific pressures and habitat context of each site — whether that is lowland wet grassland, upland moorland edge, or arable farmland with sympathetic management. Control methods are carried out in full compliance with current licensing requirements and the general licences issued by Natural England, and our work is always underpinned by a clear conservation objective rather than control for its own sake. Monitoring of breeding activity before, during, and after intervention allows us to demonstrate tangible outcomes, supporting applications for agri-environment schemes, Higher Tier Countryside Stewardship, and Species Recovery projects where robust evidence of management effectiveness is essential.
